Welcome everyone, I'm Kat Curtis. Let's get right to it! Eila Adams is going Inside The Box with some BIG news on the Oscars! What's going on EIla?
Well Kat, after months of speculation, they've finally named their host for the February 28, 2016 broadcast.
You know, hosting the Academy Awards has to be one of the toughest gigs in show business. I really thought Neil Patrick Harris did well last year, but I'm guessing it isn't him.
Yeah I thought he did great as well but no, it's not him. It's actually someone even BETTER! Here's the story! Welcome Inside the Box, Chris Rock has been announced as the 2016 host of the Academy Awards! Chris confirmed the big news through his Twitter feed alongside a photo of himself holding a golden Oscar trophy. Chris hosted the show ten years ago in 2005, delivering a KILLER opening monologue and ruffling a few feathers with insults to Jude Law, Colin Farrell, and Tobey Maguire. It appears all has been forgotten now. You can expect Hollywood's A-listers to be squirming in their seats when Rock opens the show next February.
Conan O'Brien's hitting the road - again! He'll become the first American late night host to film a special, IN ARMENIA! He was actually there last week filming, and the episodes will air next month. Conan's no stranger to doing shows outside US borders. In March, he shocked everyone by becoming the first late night host to shoot in Cuba in more than fifty years. The result was a ratings bonanza for TBS, and they're hoping to repeat that success this time around. So, what's there to do in Armenia? We'll find out when Conan debuts there November 17th!
It's not a myth, it's a fact: the next season of Mythbusters will be the last! The Discovery Channel reality series is one of the longest running series on TV. Together hosts Jamie and Adam have logged 14 seasons, 248 episodes, and nearly three thousand experiments - winning 7 Emmys along the way. The two were never pals off-screen, but on it, their chemistry was unmistakable. The guys say they have something special planned for the finale, and if we've learned anything from watching them over the years, it'll probably involve a big bang! The final season starts on January 9th!
PBS has announced when Americans will be seeing the final season of Downton Abbey. The British period drama kicks off on January 3rd, and will wrap up on the first weekend of March. If you missed out you can watch the entire final season on the day of the finale. Downton Abbey has been a ratings giant for the public broadcaster. And good news if you're a fan: rumors are swirling that a MOVIE could soon be in the works.
We'll finish up with a big reason to look forward to the holiday season! Bill Murray is starring in his very own Christmas special on Netflix! "A Very Murray Christmas" is a throwback to the classic variety show. Bill plays a TV host worried no one will show up to watch him due to a snow storm in New York City. The special features a star-studded cast. Have a look. Looks pretty good and interestingly enough, "A Very Murray Christmas" was written and directed by Sofia Coppola. Watch for its debut on December 4th! I'm Eila Adams and THAT'S what's happening, Inside the Box!
I'm Peyton Priestly. Another massive vehicle recall has been issued - this time from Toyota. The car-maker is recalling 6 point 5 million cars worldwide, including its Yaris, Corolla, Camry and RAV 4 models from 2006 to 2011. The announcement relates to a defective power window switch that is prone to overheating and could lead to a fire. Toyota has traced the fault back to grease sprayed improperly on the switch's electrical contact modules.
September is going on record as the hottest of all time. The average global temperature for the month was 60 point 6-2 degrees Fahrenheit, beating the previous high of 59 degrees. That makes 5 months in a row of record temperatures so far this year, putting 2015 on track to be the warmest year since 1880. Experts point to the dual influence of a stronger than usual El Niño weather pattern, plus the ongoing issues related to global warming.
And a Frenchman is lucky to be alive after a dramatic ocean rescue. He activated his location beacon on Tuesday after his 30-foot sailboat lost its rudder and rigging, 400 miles off the coast of Alaska. In this amazing video you can see him clinging to the damaged sailboat before taking a wild jump onto the deck of an oil ship that responded to his call for help. The story gets even more incredible Kat, he actually had his CAT with him and stuffed into his shirt, when he made the jump!
They're BOTH definitely lucky to be alive, that's for sure. And who takes their cat sailing?!! Thanks Peyton. Next up we have Angie Heyward, our designator of derision. Our bestower of beratings. Our. hander-outer of humiliation. And once again, she's going to lay a smackdown on someone whose actions went below and beyond the call of stupid. Here she is, with our Boob of the Week.
Thanks, Kat. The NFL Network is a terrific resource for football fans. It's a whole network dedicated to football. It's got telecasts, documentaries, analysis. and it has GREAT access because it's actually owned by the National Football League. And the NFL requires star players participate in media events, among other things. Of course, it doesn't always go well - remember THIS from Marshawn Lynch's infamous appearance on Super Bowl media day in January? "I'm here so I won't get fined"
But they still persevere, and unsurprisingly, NFL Networks has terrific access to the teams' locker rooms after games. And THAT's where this week got a little awkward for them - AND for viewers. It's because when reporter Albert Breer went into the Cincinnati Bengals' dressing room after they beat the Buffalo Bills, things got a little, FLESHY.
That's Breer with Adam "Pacman" Jones, but look BEHIND them, in clear view of the camera, are several Bengals players doing exactly what you'd expect them to do in the locker room after a game - they took their uniforms off. ALL the way off.
Now, I've gotta say that none of those guys has ANYTHING to be embarrassed about. The locker room is part of their workplace, and they shouldn't have to worry about their, STUFF, being broadcast to the world. Athletes might be public figures, but they still have the right to some privacy in their own change room after a game.
Some players were pretty upset and have suggested a new media policy is in order. They MAY have a point but we all have to keep in mind that access to the players is a cornerstone of viewer engagement, and locker room interviews are both timely and interesting. But SURELY, a carved-in-stone policy that the background be free of genitals is in EVERYONE's best interest.
It's crazy to think that, after all these years on the air, THAT isn't rule one for camera folks, but apparently. it's not. So for their disturbing combination of invasion of privacy and sheer sloppiness, the NFL Network is being flagged as our BOOB of the WEEK. That's fifteen yards and a loss of down! For NN I'm Angie Heyward.
I'm Natasha Olenski. October 23 would have been best-selling author Michael Crichton's 73rd birthday. To commemorate this, we're going to take a look at just a few of his bestsellers in THIS edition of the Naked Weather Forecast.
But first, let's check out a little Brainstorm Trivia! Seafarers have a saying "red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in morning, sailor's warning". Do you know why? I'll have the answer for you coming up.
And now, the forecasts! The last novel Crichton completed before his death in 2008 was "Pirate Latitudes". It's a gripping bit of historical fiction following a ruthless privateer in seventeenth century Jamaica. It's a compelling adventure, praised for its gritty reality - and reports say Steven Spielberg is developing it for the big screen. Much of the action takes place in Port Royal, Jamaica, where the weekend will feature thunderstorms and a high of 89 (32C)
Jurassic Park was, of course, the basis for the blockbuster movie. Steven Spielberg acquired the rights for $1.5 million before it was published in 1990; Crichton was hired for an additional $500,000 to adapt the novel for the screen. The final draft, left out much of the novel's exposition and violence and made numerous changes to the characters. Jurassic Park was set in Costa Rica, where the capital of San Jose will hit 80 (27C) and see thunderstorms.
1969's The Andromeda Strain was Crichton's first bestselling novel, and his first not published under a pseudonym. It's a fast-paced techno-thrilller about a lethal microorganism that's come to earth via a military satellite. And thanks to Crichton's background in medicine, his description of the deadly organism and its spread is terrifyingly plausible. The events take place in Arizona, where the capital of Phoenix will be 88 (31C) and mainly sunny over the weekend.
In 1975, Crichton took a pretty different path and published The Great Train Robbery. It's a fictionalized version the ACTUAL "Great Gold Robbery", where two hundred pounds of gold were stolen from a train leaving London, England, in 1855. It's a thriller that ended up being one of the biggest sellers of the year. It was later made into a movie, which Crichton also directed. This weekend, London will be cloudy with a high of just 58 (14C)
Now for the answer to our Brainstorm Trivia question! The colors of the sky are caused by the sun's rays splitting into the various colors of the spectrum as they pass through water vapor. When the sun is low in the sky at sunset, it indicates stable air is coming in from the west - so, good weather. But in the morning, the red sky can mean low pressure air is coming - and could be bringing a storm. Now you know.
With an eye on the skies for Naked News, I'm Natasha Olenski!
New research shows that marijuana use has more than DOUBLED in the US since 2001! 9.5 percent of Americans used weed in 2013, compared to just 4.1 percent at the start of the century. The drug's rise in popularity has also brought a rise in problems for users, including addiction. Nearly 3 in 10 pot smokers - or 6.8 million Americans - suffered from marijuana use disorders. The findings were taken from face-to-face surveys of close to 80-thousand US adults.
If you want a healthy brain you need a healthy diet, and according to a new study from Columbia University, the Mediterranean diet is the way to go. It's rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and healthy fats, and scientists believe it could help keep the brain youthful as we age. Researchers found the diet reduced the risk of Alzheimer's and other degenerative brain conditions in the elderly. They also found that people eating those foods had larger total brain volume and more gray and white matter. Talk about food for thought!
And a company that offers personal DNA testing services, has relaunched in the US after winning FDA approval. 23andMe's service analyzes your DNA to tell you whether your genes are linked to any health disorders, such as cystic fibrosis. It originally launched in 2007 using a broader menu of tests that included predisposition to things like Alzheimer's and heart disease, but was shut down by the government because it hadn't been reviewed by the FDA. 23andMe is still working for approval of those broader tests. Right now, it gives information on 36 hereditary conditions. If you're interested, pricing on the tests starts at 199 dollars! That's the news, I'm Peyton Priestly.
Thanks Peyton, I'd definitely use something like that! All right, time to TURN IT UP with Carli Bei. She's got the latest music headlines, including a Muse world tour, Taylor Swift's million dollar money skills, and a very personal new video from Gwen Stefani!
Thanks Kat, we'll start things off with Apple Music. The streaming service has managed to sign up 6 point 5 million PAYING subscribers, just 4 months after its launch. That's around a third of the number of paying customers Spotify has. With another 8 and a half million people still on the service's 90-day free trial, analysts believe that at this pace Apple Music is on track to hit 20 million paid users within it's first year. Not bad.
British rockers Muse are hitting the road in support of their latest album, Drones. It won't be your usual concert, though - the gigs will be an immersive 360 degree experience with the band playing in the MIDDLE of the venue for maximum viewing. And in line with the name of the album, Muse plan on flying actual drones over the audience. The world tour kicked off in Córdoba Argentina October 19th, with the North American leg starting in early December.
A British tabloid has crunched the numbers and claims that Taylor Swift is making a MILLION dollars a day. The Sunday Express says Swift is currently the highest-earning music star in the world, and could even hit billionaire status before her 30th birthday in 2019! Most of her cash is coming from album sales, touring profits and product endorsements, but she's also made several canny investments in music management companies. Is there anything this girl can't do?
If you were hoping to catch David Bowie on his next tour, you might be too late. The Space Oddity singer has reportedly RETIRED from touring, at least according to his booking agent. To be fair, it's not a HUGE surprise - Bowie hasn't toured since 2004. He hasn't COMPLETELY retired though, his off-Broadway musical "Lazarus", based on the 1976 movie "The Man Who Fell To Earth" that starred Bowie, opens in December.
And what's the best way to get over an ex? If you're Gwen Stefani, you write a song about it! Stefani's new single "Used To Love You" features highly personal lyrics CLEARLY directed at her recent break-up with husband Gavin Rossdale. The video stays on Stefani's face for the entire song, letting us watch as she shifts from sadness to anger while describing the relationship breakdown. Here's a clip: It's a pretty emotional video and I'm sure it took a lot of courage for her to let the world see it. Turning it up, for Naked News, I'm Carli Bei!
Okay, Eila's here with me, and we're going to answer a few of the emails that have come in to us recently! The first one is from Stephen, and he asks
Kat Curtis has said a few times that she is 6' tall. But Carli Bei also looks taller than the other anchors when she is standing next to one of the girls. On Sunday morning's show when Carli and Isabella were co-hosting, Carli appeared to have several inches on Isabella. Can you find out how tall Carli is?
I AM six feet, and the tallest here. Carli is five foot seven, which ties her with Peyton as our second-tallest anchor. BUT, that's in bare feet. All bets are off when the heels go on!
You can see EVERYONE's heights and measurements in our bios, by the way! Just go to NakedNews.com and click the "Anchors" link. Okay, the next question is from Jody who wants to know
Dear Naked News; Now that we're half-way through October, do you still do Halloween specials? I love Halloween.
Oh, we definitely still do Halloween specials, Jody! This year's is going to be our best ever, too. We've been working on it for WEEKS. Wait until you see the costumes we picked!
You'll get to vote for your favorite, too! I'll win, of course.
We'll see.
I'll win. Okay, the last question today is from Martin, who wrote
The "My Blog" link on Kat Curtis' anchor page is correct, but it redirects back to nakednews.com.
That's true, Martin. I do a lot of Naked News' social media and posting on the Naked News blog now, so the Kat Curtis blog was kind of redundant. Keep an eye out on nakednews.com/blog for our daily post and whatever else we decide to put up!
Thanks to everyone who wrote in! If YOU've got a question or comment for us, you can email us at
[email protected].
Or you can use that social media and drop us a line via Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
We'll see you back again tomorrow. Take care!
